You are permitted to take Co-op starting in grade 11. However, the suggested year that you should take will depend on how many years you intend on spending in high school and what is your future destination (e.g. university, college, apprenticeship, work).
Destination Graduate In 4 Years Graduate In 5 Years
University You should take Co-op during grade 11. This is because you will need a minimum of 6 grade 12 university/mixed courses when applying to university. Co-op counts for 2, 3, or 4 credits on your timetable in grade 12. This would leave you with limited university/mixed courses to be used in calculating your admission average since your timetable would be full at 8 credits with Co-op. It is usually best to have at least 7 grade 12 university/mixed courses so that you may have the opportunity to drop a mark depending on the admission requirements of the school that you are applying to. Also, you must consider your ability to maintain an 8 credit course load in grade 12. You should take Co-op during your 4th or 5th year. Waiting until your 4th year will give you the opportunity to experience more courses and to have a better idea of what career you would like to explore.
College You should take Co-op during grades 11 or 12. The requirements for college require grade 12 English and perhaps a Math but do not usually require a certain number of grade 12 credits. Therefore, there is room in your grade 12 year for Co-op. 4th or 5th year.
Apprenticeship You should take during grades 11 or 12. 4th or 5th year
Work You should take during grades 11 or 12. 4th or 5th year
